Looking for the best Tangier restaurants to try in the Medina? After more than 10 years living in Morocco and countless meals in Tangier’s old town, I’ve put together this insider’s list of the best restaurants in Tangier Medina — from cheap local favourites to rooftop spots with a view.

Restaurant Bachir
If you want fancy tablecloths and a quiet atmosphere, keep walking—but if you want the best local meal in Tangier, you have to eat at Bashir. Restaurant Bachir is one of the most popular spots in Tangier, located near the Medina. It serves traditional Moroccan food – tagines, couscous on Fridays, grilled fish, lentil and bean dishes – at very low prices. It’s popular with locals and fills up at lunch, so go early or expect a wait for a table. High-energy spot with over 50 tables spilling out onto both sides of the road.
Le Saveur du Poisson
OMG I love this place. Le Saveur du Poisson Tangier is a family-run seafood place in the medina, near the Grand Socco, with no menu – you’re served a fixed sequence of dishes for 250 MAD (around 25 eur). Expect fish soup, grilled catch of the day and a homemade fruit juice to finish. The wooden interior and set format make it a Tangier institution, and it’s one of my favourites. No reservation; you’ll be squeezed at one table with strangers – so worth it.

Chez Hassan
Located in Tangier Medina, going up the hill towards the Kasbah district, Chez Hassan is a local grill serving Moroccan staples – brochettes, kefta, salads. Simple, casual and cheap, very busy. Bit of tourists spot, but still great option for grilled food.
Abou Tayssir
Abou Tayssir restaurant in Tangier Medina is a small, family-run spot serving Syrian food. Love its delicious menu: shawarma, hummus, grilled meats, Mssabbaha, Baba Ghanoush, toutabbal, tabulĂ©, etc. It’s casual and inexpensive, and keep in mind – just a few tables.
Darna
Darna – “our house” in Arabic (full name is Solarium Association Darna) – is a restaurant run by a women’s and children’s association near the Grand Socco, just behind Cinema Rif. You eat a fixed daily menu of Moroccan home cooking – tagine, couscous on Fridays, a starter and dessert – in a quiet courtyard under a fig tree. Daily menu with soup, salad and main for 70dh. The atmosphere in the yard where you sit is also quiet and nice. You can also visit their shop of goods made by the women of the cooperative.
Macondo
Macondo Tangier is a rooftop restaurant and a popular sunset spot. The terrace overlooks the medina, with a lovely cozy white interior. No alcohol. The name is a nod to GarcĂa Márquez’s fictional town.
Salon Bleu
Salon Bleu is a small rooftop cafĂ© in the Kasbah, easy to spot by its blue-painted terrace. It serves Moroccan food, tea and light meals (no alcohol). The roof gives wide views over the strait. Space is limited, so it fills up quickly. Be careful of the many steps leading to the terrace. For lunch/dinner, for me it’s too crowded as it’s a small place, but I love going there for coffee, tea, and deserts.
Mofi
Located bit outside Medina, a Deli Fusion spot Mofi restaurant serves modern, Asian-influenced food with a twist on the usual Tangier menu. It’s one of the newer, more contemporary spots in the city. Good if you want a break from tagine and couscous.
El Morocco Club
El Morocco Club sits in the Kasbah, near Place du Tabor. It’s one of the more upscale places to eat in the old town, serving Moroccan and international dishes. Downstairs there’s an intimate cocktail and piano bar. Book ahead in high season.
La Muralla
La Muralla is a more contemporary-style rooftop restaurant (they even have an elevator) in the medina of Tangier that serves alcohol, which is less common among local spots in the medina. The terrace looks over the old town towards the port. Perfect if you want a more international dinner, rooftop views, the medina and drinks.
Villa Mabrouka
Villa Mabrouka was once Yves Saint Laurent’s Tangier garden and is now an upscale hotel with elegant garden restaurants. This 1940s Andalusian-style villa was transformed by famed British designer Jasper Conran into a twelve-suite boutique hotel and opened in 2023. The setting – manicured grounds above the strait – is the main draw. Villa Mabrouka has 3 restaurants – Italian Luca’s Terrazza, L’ORANGERIE on the terrace and the dining room inside. Reservations are essential and prices sit at the higher end, reservation is must.
Soli Tangier
Sister of the trendy brunch Cafe Alma restaurant in the new town, Medina located SOLI restaurant serves mainly Moroccan food. Opened in 2025, it is a perfect addition for those wanting Moroccan food but with a more contemporary interior.
