Marrakech is fine; there is life, many places are open, and destroyed parts of Medina are recovering quickly (Marrakech is not destroyed, a lot of media is falsely reporting the current situation in Marrakech. Life there is on, Jemaa El fan square open at night etc).

The Sahara desert road is passable and not affected. Beaches etc

However, in the High Atlas mountain region/Taroudant, people still need lots lots of help for a long time. Many villages are destroyed…. Help them by not cancelling.

Today Morocco and the whole Islam world are celebrating Eid al Adha.

Eid Al Adha (or feast of the sacrifice) is one of the holiest events in Islam. It's also called Eid el-Kbir, meaning "The Big Holiday", and is regarded as the holier of the two Eids.

The celebration of Eid al-Adha begins around 40 days after the end of Ramadan. Eid also marks the end of the annual pilgrimage of the Hajj.

The roots of Eid al-Adha celebration come from the all known story.

Prophet Abraham was commanded by God, in a form of a dream vision, to sacrifice his son, Ishmail. But while he was in the act of sacrificing his son, at the last moment, God sent the Angel Gabriel with a huge sheep. Gabriel informed Abraham to sacrifice the ram as a ransom for his son.

Therefore, at Eid al-Fitr celebration, Muslims worldwide honours Abraham's willingness to obey God's order to sacrifice his son.

On the first day of Eid al-Adha, the head of the family or a butcher has to sacrifice the animal with a sharp knife. Then, during the following days, families prepare a variety of meat dishes.

Eid al-Adha is a day of sharing, caring and being thankful. Each family must divide it into three shares. 1/3 of the animal goes for the poor, other family eats immediately or saves for later, and the last 1/3 belongs for friends.

After reviewing hundreds of travellers’ Morocco itineraries and travel-related emails, I made a list of the TOP 5 mistakes people make while travelling for their dream vacation in Morocco.

1. MOROCCO IS HUGE. Many travellers on the 7 days trip want to include everything. They forget that it takes 9 hours direct drive to reach the Sahara desert or Chefchouen. So if you have only one week in Morocco and don’t want to spend the trip on the road, choose only a few locations.

2. MOROCCO IS NOT SO CHEAP. A long time ago, Morocco was cheaper for travellers, but not anymore. Somehow people imagine Morocco is a cheap country, and you can get a hotel room for 15 eur (you actually can, but a basic one). Of course, you can travel on a budget: eat in street food restaurants, use public transport, cheap hotels - but only some are so adventurous.

3. SUMMERS ARE HOTTTT. Yep, I know most of you travellers have vacations in summertime. But the hottest season in Morocco is July and August when the temperature in Marrakech or the south can reach up to +50C. If you still want to come during these months, choose more beach towns or the Nord of Morocco.

4. Morocco is about more than just sightseeing. Many travellers include in their itineraries the top must-see attractions, often all big cities, museums and monuments. Jumping from one place to another, they need to remember to experience a new culture by doing slow experiences such as meeting locals, having a cooking class, getting a guide etc.

5. SPONTANIOUSITY. Morocco is all about being open-minded and often spontaneous. So don’t over plan your itinerary with many things to do. There will be places closed when they are supposed to be open; late drivers or restaurants will forget your reservation. Don’t get frustrated; Morocco will teach you to relax and enjoy simple things more.

Before moving to Morocco, I was successfully working as an art journalist, editor and head of communication for art projects in Lithuania (I have a BA degree in art criticism and history, and art takes huge space in my life). My adventurous spirit as well drove me afterwards to spend 4 years in the Netherlands, in multicultural Amsterdam.

However, life in Europe was too regulated, too lacking in freedom and surprise, and always seemed to follow the same patterns: work, home, friends, annual holidays and so on. I went on and kept looking until I stumbled upon the unpredictable and amazing Morocco lifestyle. So I divided my life between Europe and Africa.

Now, I’m fortunate to be able to work remotely for an art events company in Lithuania, as well pursuing my career as a personal travel planner in Morocco.
